100% Job Function Summary
Involves a wide range of supervision and case evaluation for the Student Advocate Office. Provides support to the SAO Chief of Staff in casework, policy, and supervision for the Office. Reports to SAO Chief of Staff on the operations of the Financial Assistance and Basic Needs Division and oversees all divisional cases under Advocate’s supervision.

Generic Scope
Executes operations of Student Advocate’s Office through the Financial Aid and Basic Needs Division. Has responsibility over cases under Division. Oversees casework, develops strategies and policies, manages division development and performance with general supervision from the SAO Chief of Staff. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect students and organization.

Department Overview
The Student Advocate’s Office is an non-partisan, non-legal program under the Office of Student Life of the Student Union Assembly at UC Santa Cruz. We offer support and advice to any undergraduate student in need of help with financial aid, basic needs, conduct, and academics. Our caseworkers serve as a bridge between students and administrators. Navigating this university can be challenging and caseworkers will provide students with assistance and support with grievances and/or disputes. All assistance is free and confidential.

Responsibilities include the following:

80% - Casework
1:1 Student Engagement: Responsible for meeting with students for their individual cases and reviewing their application, specifically for basic needs or financial aid. Develops multiple strategies and methods for students to choose from to make the best decision for their case. Advises students on their case and supports student in the decision-making process. Maintains individual case until the case has been closed or resolved, carries on into the next fiscal year, or until the Chief of Staff and/or Student Advocate decide the case has become highly sensitive and/or difficult for the director.
In applications for the Emergency Housing Fund, they will compile a comprehensive and cohesive application packet derived from student’s case. Responsible, along with the Chief of Staff, for overseeing and tracking the case until funds have been determined.

10% - Campus Communication
Has responsibility for establishing and maintaining meetings between SAO and campus partners. Partners may include, but not limited to: Financial Aid Director, Slug Support Director, EOP, SHIP, Registrar’s Office, SUA Advisor, SAO Chief of Staff, Student Advocate and Associate Dean of Students (if available). Establishes relationship between campus partners to begin referring students to SAO for help and advise. Sits on Basic Needs Committee with Student Advocate and SUA Food Pantry Manager(s).

10% - Division Management
Shows strong management skills through collaboration with the Chief of Staff. Prepares bi-weekly divisonional progress reports for Chief of Staff. Attends weekly director meetings with Chief of Staff. Attends bi-weekly SAO meetings. Report any changes to individual cases in the case management system. Creates monthly finance reports and case summaries for Chief of Staff to review. Conducts divisional evaluation. Has close supervision of any coordinators, shadows, or volunteers that may join division.
