Skills Required: Previous COSMOS Resident Assistant experience required.
Undergraduate status applicants preferred.

- Ability to work independently, organize, set
priorities, and make decisions under pressure
- Past live-in experience with K-12 residential programs
Skills Preferred: Knowledge of or interest in math and science.

Percentage of Time Duty
40% Community Building and Residential Programming:
Oversees all aspects of recreational and social activities for students when they are not in class
Advises RAs in program planning, preparation, delivery, and follow-through
Will oversee a cluster specific group of students.
Leads weekend field trips, ensuring that all logistics are in place including: pack-out meals, sign-out sheets, staffing, supervision, bus information, and site information
Communicate programming plans, RA concerns, and student concerns to the CRE
Serves as primary resource person for the student residents
Helps lead daily meetings for the Resident Assistants, and works closely with the Residential Program Manager and/or CRE in the development of agenda topics for the daily residential meetings
Assists in problem-solving, conflict resolution, leadership development, time management and study skills for the student residents
Facilitates in the development of a sense of community and maintains a living environment conducive to the academic, intellectual, multicultural, and social development of all members of the residential community
Sets a standard of communal and individual behavior within the residential community
Establishes relationships of respect and trust with residents, program staff, and instructional staff
Serves as a role model for residents and sets an example by abiding by all regulations and policies of EPC, COSMOS, and UCSC
Participates in a variety of program sponsored events and activities
10% Supports Goals and Objectives of Academic Programming:
Leads the RA staff in preparing for daily cluster meetings.
Provides tutoring when necessary
Supports classroom discipline and monitors student behavior
Accommodates academic programming needs by adjusting schedules and re-prioritizing activities
20% Residential Counseling and Mediation:
Meet regularly with Residential Program Manager and/or CRE.
Advise Resident Assistants and provide assistance in resolving a wide array of problems, (i.e., roommate conflicts, classroom concerns, substance abuse, lack of privacy, stress, loneliness, discrimination, intolerance, noise, etc.)
Provides pertinent, detailed, and timely oral/written information to the Residential Program Manager and/or CRE in regards to the issues listed above
Creates and maintains case files on individual students
Resolves conflict among residential students, hears grievances and initiates mediation
Serves as additional support for other Resident Assistants
30% Administrative Duties:
Assists with the oversight of the COSMOS office to assure smooth operations and communication
Follow through with RAs with regards to programming paperwork and daily reports
Communicate with parents, faculty, vendors, and other university employees as needed
(10%) Safety and Security:
In the absence of the CRE, Residential Program Manager, and Program Director, take a leadership role in crisis events. This would include contacting the police, guiding RAs, containing or relocating students, and following directions given by police and/or campus officials.
May be responsible for determining on site crisis, disaster, and emergency response in the residence halls
Provides security at evening activities and events
Assists the Residential Program Manager and/or CRE with maintenance and room/apartment inspections;
Provides confidential and sensitive information to the Program Manager and/or CRE and other appropriate program staff regarding incidents involving substance abuse, harassment, assault, etc;
Interprets, promotes and assists in the enforcement of the university’s residential policies including but not limited to substance abuse, harassment, and quiet hours
Aids in the maintenance of safety and good order in the residence halls
Assists with the monitoring of facilities, furnishings, and equipment to assure that high health and safety standards are maintained
(10%) Program Development and Improvement:
Works with the Program Manager and CRE to improve the COSMOS residential program including policies, procedures, forms, and manuals
Supports COSMOS staff by providing stories for newsletter
Works with COSMOS staff by participating in media efforts
Participates in program evaluation by serving on focus groups, attending debriefings, and completing exit surveys/questionnaires

Senior Resident Assistants are compensated with Room and Board plus an hourly wage.

Previous COSMOS Resident Assistant experience required.
Licensed drivers may be required to drive program vehicles
Must be available to work evenings and weekends
Must live in residence halls
Scheduling conflicts as a result of participation in summer school, other jobs, or vacation may not be accommodated
Work shifts will be an approx: 40 hours per week, with possible overtime up to 10 additional hours.
All selected candidates will be First Aid and CPR trained, TB tested, and fingerprinted.

California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) - An academic 4-week program for talented and motivated students in grades 8 – 12. Each student will be placed in a topical "cluster" of math and/or science courses taught by UCSC faculty. Students come from throughout California.

Under the direction of the Coordinator for Residential Education (CRE), incumbent will provide services as Senior Resident Assistant (SRA) in the residence halls during the summer program. The SRA will perform Resident Assistant duties that will include support and supervision of high school students; counseling; policy enforcement; conflict mediation; and on-site crisis and emergency response coordination. Additional SRA duties will include: assisting the CRE in all areas, advising Resident Assistants in all of their job duties; providing leadership for cluster meetings; overseeing all aspects of programming; leading field trips. The SRA will interface with other summer programs and EPC staff on planning and implementation of residential programs. This is a live-in position.
