Job Description
Skills Required: Under the supervision of Housing Facilities staff, this entry-level position involves the repair and upkeep of residential campus buildings. Applicant must have the ability to follow directions and pay close attention to detail. Must be able to work cooperatively with others. Must be reliable and punctual. Must be self-motivated, willing to work in a team atmosphere and be supportive of co-workers. Must be flexible and work where help is needed, including occasional office administration work.

Some experience with painting and/or maintenance and the ability to work with power and hand tools is desired but not mandatory, as training will be provided.

Special Conditions of Employment:

Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance. Ability to work from stepladders, reach overhead and make repetitive motions. Under supervision, using best practices and necessary protective equipment, incumbents will work in areas with latex paint fumes and airborne dust. Job-related health and safety training will be provided.

Please note: This position is full time (40 hours a week) throughout the summer (June through Sep.). We will not be able to hire part-time, half-time, Summer Session students, or anyone who will not be able to complete the entire summer.

Possible work during June move-out and September move-in weekend.

Skills Preferred: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
Percentage of Time Duty
60% Duties will include extensive interior and some exterior painting; washing walls, doors, and ceilings; preparing walls, filling holes and making basic patches to drywall; sanding of related woodwork such as walls, baseboards, and window sills. Painting doors, handrails, etc. as directed.

Removing, sanding, refinishing, and moving bedroom and lounge furniture.
Moving supplies between work sites. Making sure supplies are stocked and supply rooms are organized.
40% Miscellaneous tasks, including: Removing trash and items left by residents; removing carpets from bedrooms and halls; installing cove bases; removing furniture from areas to be carpeted; and performing light maintenance tasks as directed. Loading and unloading furniture and supplies at job sites. Possibly performing light year-end custodial work, as well as other facilities related tasks in preparation for the new academic year.

Special Comments: Please Pay Close Attention to the Following: This job posting is for the East Zone of the University Housing Facilities Department, which includes Crown College, Merrill College, Cowell College, and Stevenson College. You will be assigned to a specific college but encouraged to participate as a team member within the entire East College Zone. Due to work demands you may from time to time be asked to work in other colleges across the zone.

The East Zone Maintenance staff prides itself on maintaining its facilities in the best condition possible.

All UCSC students who want to make a difference are welcome. The summer is fast-paced and we will require 100% dedication from each of our employees. Hired candidates must be able to commit to the entire summer from June 17-September 20.

On-campus housing is being provided at a reduced rate for interested candidates, $20.50 per nights. Details will be discussed with interview.

Up to a maximum of five days of non-paid vacation may be taken with supervisor approval.
