Job Description
Skills Required: Ability to maintain marine aquaria.
Ability to handle live marine fish and invertebrates.
Ability to work outdoors, occasionally during harsh weather.
Ability to lift 40 lbs. and physically access exhibit and service areas.
Excellent organizational skills: able to meet deadlines and produce accurate work.
Ability to work both as a member of a team or independently within guidelines provided by the Aquarium Curator.
Good interpersonal skills with ability to provide information in a welcoming manner to Seymour Center volunteers, school children and visiting public of all ages.
Willingness to wear a Seymour Center uniform.
Possess a California Drivers License and a good driving record.
Ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required.
Skills Preferred: Experience working in a public aquarium, museum or educational facility, or a clear desire to gain work experience in such an environment.
Familiarity with local marine flora and fauna of the Central California Coast or completed coursework in Invertebrate Zoology, Ichthyology or Marine Botany.

Percentage of Time Duty
100% Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of aquarium exhibits & holding tanks.
Assist with the feeding and care of aquarium specimens as directed by the Aquarium Curator.
Maintain cleaning tools and supplies as needed.
Work with volunteer aquarists.
May train to serve as lead aquarist in the Aquarium Curator's absence.
May assist Aquarium Curator with collecting intertidal plants and animals. If the incumbent possesses UCSC Scientific Diver Certification, Aquarium Curator may administer training and development of subtidal specimen collecting.
Assist with general aquarium operations as assigned by the Aquarium Curator.
Answer general questions from visitors to the Seymour Center.
Keep accurate animal husbandry records.
Assist with the preparation and delivery of feeding demonstrations or other presentations.
Assist Aquarium Curator to train new volunteer aquarists when needed.
Drive a UC vehicle to pick up and deliver aquarium supplies.
