Job Description
Skills Required: • The Athletics & Recreation Game Official is responsible for two roles: managing participants and the games in the Intramural Sports program as well as providing game day operational support for varsity UC Santa Cruz Athletics programs.
• Strong commitment to an environment that promotes honesty and integrity.
• Officiate and keep accurate record of games and events to the best of personal ability within Intramural Sports, UC Santa Cruz Athletics & Recreation, and NCAA rules, policies, and procedures.
• Take constructive criticism from supervisors and co-workers to improve at position of Athletics & Recreation Game Official.
• Attendance at all assigned trainings and meetings.
• Ability to work with diverse populations and possess awareness of the campus population’s diversity.
• Pass any required written/oral tests related to officiating a sport offered by Intramural Sports.

Skills Preferred: • Previous officiating experience in any sport at any level.
• Previous customer service experience.
• Knowledge of sport-specific rules, Intramural Sports Policies & Procedures, UC Santa Cruz Athletics & Recreation policies and procedures, and/or NCAA policies and procedures.
• Previous experience resolving conflict.
• Previous experience managing, mitigating, or eliminating risk.
Percentage of Time Duty
50% • As Intramural Sports Game Official, each employee is responsible for managing participants and the games in the Intramural Sports program. Strong interpersonal (oral and written) communication skills are required.
• Ensure safety of Intramural Sports participants through knowledge, enforcement, and interpretation of Intramural Sports rules, policies, and procedures.
• Learn, follow, and enforce established policies and procedures of Intramural Sports.
• Assist co-workers in event setup, teardown, and equipment management.
• Provide accurate, factual information to participants, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Officiate every game/event in a fair and impartial manner. Officiated sports include but are not limited to basketball, soccer, futsal, flag football, inner-tube water polo, and dodgeball.
• Report observations to supervisor and directly write/type reports as necessary.
• Assist with preparation and inspection of each game site to eliminate or mitigate risk.
• Assign sportsmanship ratings to each team according to the Intramural Sports Code of Conduct.
• Provide friendly, upbeat customer service at all times.
• Maintain availability to work on Fridays or Sundays for at least 4 hours. Follow all program and department employee policies.
• Maintain a positive, professional relationship with staff and co-workers.
• Assist Intramural Sports Supervisors as needed and requested.
• Attend all assigned trainings, meetings and shifts according to the program’s schedule policy.
• Adhere to all OPERS policies and procedures.
50% • During UC Santa Cruz Athletics game day events, each employee will be responsible for assisting the execution of an NCAA DIII game day event according to established policies and procedures for the sport of that event including but not limited to:
• Event setup and tear down on campus and at Kaiser Permanente Arena in downtown Santa Cruz, CA.
• Scoreboard and/or shot clock operation;
• Written scorekeeping and statistic calling/recording;
• Floor sweeping and/or ball retrieval;
• Mascot operations;
• Music coordination
• Play-by-play and/or color commentary roles.

Special Comments: This position will teach students effective event management, verbal and non-verbal communication, conflict resolution, customer service, time management, and organizational skills. Athletics & Recreation Game Officials manage their peers in game situations and make quick, sound decisions based on objective judgement of the physical activity in front of them. Athletics & Recreation Game Officials must be willing to learn, get out of their comfort zone, and continue improving throughout their time working in the program.
