Job Description
Skills Required: Under the supervision of Housing Facilities staff this Lead trains, leads and assists other Crew members in the painting and routine maintenance of campus residential buildings. Prior repair, maintenance and painting experience is mandatory, as well as interpersonal skills sufficient to lead and communicate effectively with the work crew.

The incumbent must be able to demonstrate proper painting techniques, provide crewmembers with feedback on the quality and completeness of work, and must be able to understand and follow directions with minimal supervision; must be experienced with interior and exterior painting; must possess knowledge of drywall patching techniques, and knowledge of the safe use of basic hand tools screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.), battery-powered drills, and other maintenance equipment.

The incumbent must have experience working in large crews with constant deadlines. Must possess strong planning and organizational skills. And be able to perform occasional office administrative tasks.

This position is full time (40 hours a week) throughout the summer. We will not be able to hire part-time, half-time, summer session students, or anyone who will not be able to complete the entire summer.

Special Conditions of Employment: Ability to carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Ability to use ladders, reach overhead and make repetitive motions. Under supervision, using best practices and necessary protective equipment, incumbents will work in areas with latex paint fumes and airborne dust. Job-related health and safety training will be provided.

45% Leads and trains the summer work crew in painting and repair work within housing areas, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and the Senior Building Maintenance Worker. Gives written and oral instructions to crewmembers; exercises good judgment and sensitivity when working among staff, conferees and construction crews. Consistently supports and educates fellow crewmembers of proper technique to successfully complete tasks.

Coordinates work crew scheduling around conferences and construction projects. Following established procedures and supervisor’s general direction, provides crew with direction regarding maintenance procedures, mediates conflicts between crewmembers, and works to maintain morale and productivity of the crew. Works effectively and collaboratively with other college leads. In conjunction with supervisor ensures safety standards are met and that employees are regularly informed of proper safety standards including use of personal protective equipment. Maintains attention to detail and meets deadlines.
45% Performs maintenance and repairs for zone areas as assigned. Works with hand and power tools to refinish/repair furniture. Assists with preventative maintenance on plumbing, door hardware, windows and minor electrical repair. Performs furniture repair as instructed. Assists on special projects as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor or Senior Building Maintenance Worker.

Performs painting, drywall repair and custodial duties in housing areas as assigned. This includes the use of ladders and painting supplies, the lifting/moving of furniture and 5 gallon paint buckets, as well as tools and equipment. After being instructed, follows University procedures and CalOSHA regulations when working with hazardous materials (chemicals/solvents). Uses caution and care to protect and cover non-painted surfaces.
5% Performs inspections; develops material lists and stock tools/hardware. Represents Zone Facilities at meetings as necessary and as assigned. At the direction of supervisor, the Lead may assist contractors or vendors by providing access, accompanying inspectors or other tasks necessary for successful completion of work.

Confirms accurate reporting of student staff time. Is responsible for building security and assigned keys during work hours.

Typically, this position is reserved for those who have previous experience working with UCSC Facilities. Because this position requires prior maintenance experience, you will be looked upon as a mentor and skilled student employee. This is a high-level, responsible, student employee role.

The Family Student Housing unit part of the [West Zone] Maintenance staff prides itself on maintaining its facilities in the best condition possible. The summer is fast-paced and we will require 100% dedication from each of our employees.
Up to five days maximum of non-paid vacation may be taken with supervisor approval.


This is a full-time summer position. Days are Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
