Job Description
Skills Required: Prior experience in plumbing as it pertains to the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems; must have a basic knowledge of carpentry; must know composting techniques; must be able to read construction blueprints; must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Must be dependable and hardworking, self motivated, detail oriented; must be able to work with other staff and residents of many different cultures and backgrounds.

Ability to exercise good judgment and sensitivity when working with fellow staff.

Ability to work both alone and in groups, and to work at times with minimal supervision.

Ability to train, lead and provide assistance to other crewmembers in groundskeeping maintenance. Possession of interpersonal skills sufficient to lead and communicate effectively with a diverse work crew. Ability to provide crewmembers with feedback on the quality and completeness of work.

Must demonstrate proper and safe groundskeeping maintenance techniques, and must be able to understand and follow directions with minimal supervision.

Possession of a California Drivers License and a good driving record.

Leads and trains the summer student groundskeeping maintenance crew. Gives written and oral instructions to crewmembers, Consistently supports and educates fellow crewmembers in proper techniques to successfully complete tasks.

Coordinates the scheduling of the work crew in groundskeeping maintenance, provides crew with direction, mediates conflicts between crew members, and works to maintain morale and productivity of the crew.

Because this position requires prior Groundskeeping maintenance experience you will be looked upon as a mentor and skilled student employee. This is a high level, responsible, student employee role.

The job is for coverage at Family Student Housing, which is part of the West Facilities Zone at UCSC.

60% Leads and trains the summer student groundskeeping maintenance crew. Gives written and oral instructions to crewmembers, Consistently supports and educates fellow crewmembers in proper techniques to successfully complete tasks.

Coordinates the scheduling of the work crew in groundskeeping maintenance, provides crew with direction, mediates conflicts between crew members, and works to maintain morale and productivity of the crew.

Ensures that safety standards are met and that employees are regularly informed of proper safety standards including the use of personal protective equipment.

Maintains attention to detail and meets deadlines.
40% Performs inspections and develops material lists. Confirms accurate reporting of student staff time. Is responsible for building security and assigned keys during work hours. Perform other various duties as assigned.

Under minimal supervision from Lead groundskeeper and groundskeeper the incumbent shall operate machinery such as lawnmower, weedeater, blower, etc.; maintain grounds; water plants; dig trenches, ditches and planting holes; prune shrubs and small trees; clear storm drains of debris; blow, sweep, rake and water; maintain dumpster areas; organize recycling and carry cardboard to off-site location; make dump runs as needed for large items.

Responsible for pruning, fertilization, renovation of lawns, construction and installation of garden boxes, construction of retaining walls, irrigation repair and trouble shooting, composting, site preparations for new plantings.

Drives University vehicles as needed.
