Job Description
Skills Required: Previous customer service experience is required for successful hire in this position. Applicants should have a high level of interpersonal and communication skills and be able to answer questions in a kind and clear manner consistently. Successful applicants must be able to effectively serve a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and members of the Santa Cruz community. Applicants must be able to take direction from both peers and staff and be able to perform a large variety of tasks using analytical a problem solving skills. Student employees must be punctual, reliable and maintain a consistent schedule. Familiarity with filing systems experience sufficient to file books, folders, and papers using Library of Congress call number classification system is required. Computer data entry skills and the ability to use discretion when working with confidential records is required. Applicants must be able to regularly stand for long periods of time, push loaded book trucks, file/shelve books, and move/shift heavy books on shelves as high as 82” above the floor. Applicants must be able to bend, lift, and stretch. Undergraduate status applicants only.

Skills Preferred: Previous library experience is preferred.
Percentage of Time Duty
70% Circulation/Reserves:

- Check out and renew library materials with varying due dates and lending periods.

- Instruct patrons in a highly service-oriented manner on the use of online library catalogs and research resources.

- Ensure the confidentiality of patron records and transactions at all times.

- Provide consistent and professional service when assisting patrons with a wide range of questions, disputes, and complaints.

- Conduct basic and in-depth database inquiries concerning item status, location, availability, and format.

- Conduct physical searches for missing items and help patrons find items in the main collection.

-Ensure the safety and security of the library by identifying and reporting all operational concerns (spills, broken glass, fire hazards) or suspicious activities.

-Honest communication and the ability to ask for assistance when an answer is unknown.

-Answer phones, transfer calls, and place callers on hold.

-Create and edit records in digital library software system with attention to detail and accuracy.
20% Check-in:

- Push large, heavily laden book-bins and re-shelving carts to and from areas throughout the library.

- Lift and load/unload large quantities of books.

- Run individual books across a security sensitizer.

- Pay close attention to detail of call number, location, and all pop-up messages while processing large quantities of books.

- Evaluate books in need of mending.

- Notify patrons of reserve fine accruals and billing policies.

- Shelve reserve materials using Library of Congress call number classification and reserve alphanumerical filing systems.
10% Other:

- Respond to security alarms and politely confront patrons who have set off alarms.

- Provide microform equipment assistance.

- Provide ADA assistance.

- Assist other library units as necessary.

- Other duties as assigned.
