Job Description
Skills Required: •     Rising junior or senior (exceptional sophomores might be considered).
•     Declared Chemistry or BMB major
•     Excellent communication skills.
•     Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
•     Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality.
•     Adhere to University policy and FERPA regulations
•     Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity and academic excellence.
•     Resourceful and uses problem solving skills.
•     Deep knowledge of UC Santa Cruz including the academic support systems, registration processes and policies, and how to navigate academic departments.
•     Maintain a GPA of 3.2/4.0, remain in good standing, and have a clear judicial history.
•     Must be able to give a one-year commitment to this position
•     Must be able to commit to work at least 2 – 4 hours each day M – Th.
•     Self motivated with attention to detail.
• Greet and check in guests, staff, students and faculty as needed.


Skills Preferred: • Graphic Design experience not required but preferred
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and Mac Computers not required but
preferred.



Percentage of Time Duty
60% Advising Duties
•     Develop and maintain a knowledge base and understanding of academic policies, procedures, and university resources
•     Provide referral to appropriate university / campus resources.
•     Assist students in understanding the policies and processes related to the course registration process, troubleshoot enrollment issues.
•     Assist student in understanding basic functions of their MYUCSC Student Center.
•     Participate in campus events as a representative of Department of Chemistry Advising such as Spring Spotlight.
• Greet & check in students, faculty, staff and guests as needed.
40% Administrative Duties
•     Participate in ongoing departmental projects as assigned by supervisor/mentor
•     Assist both the Undergraduate and Graduate staff student Advisers with administrative tasks.
•     Assist Department Assistant & manager with administrative tasks.
•     Assist with front desk functions and process and other administrative tasks as needed.
•     Other duties/special projects as assigned.

Special Comments: The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is looking for talented and motivated students to become Academic Peer Advisers for the 2019-2020 academic year. Academic Peer Advisers are juniors and seniors who work throughout the academic year to support our Department advising program and enhance student access to academic resources.

Peer advising and student success facilitation provides you with opportunities to serve as a role model for students, while gaining professional development experience. Training will be provided and is required for all newly hired peer Advisers.

Continued employment for a following year is not a guarantee. Peer Advisers will have the option to reapply at the end of their first year. Returners to the position may be eligible for an increase in salary based on performance reviews.
