Job Description
Skills Required: Graduate student with proven record of high academic achievements and strong program of research in Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, and or Arts.
1. Ability to relate materials in a sensitive and effective manner, advanced understanding of the research process, and general understanding of mentoring dynamics.
2. Experience working with first-generation or transfer students from multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and/or economically disadvantaged students.
3. Good academic standing, ability to listen and have commitment to serving historically underrepresented students.

Interested graduate students must submit: 1) CV and 2) Cover letter addressing the required skills and a brief description of their experience with mentorship and or program managements, including but not limited to the management of undergraduate research assistants.

The Cultivamos Excelencia Project Direct will assist with this process.

100% Under the direction and support of the Cultivamos Excelencia Project Director and with the support of the Cultivamos Excelencia Assistant, the Lead Research Mentor will assist in coordinating the activities for the 2017-18 Cultivamos Excelencia Scholars program including:

A. Planning, revising, and finalizing program content.

B. Advertising graduate student mentor (GM) positions, including information sessions (fall quarter 2017) to recruit interested graduate students.

C. Assisting with reviewing applications, selecting, and notifying and hiring of GMs

D. Coordinating GM's research presentations at SJCC during Fall quarter, including travel and reimbursement logistics.

E. Cross matching mentees with mentors.

F. Conducting a 4-hour Culturally Responsive Mentorship training for GMs during fall quarter 2017.

G. Launching program for mentees and mentors at the end of Fall quarter.

H. Working with GMs to schedule three 2-hour training/checkins during Winter and Spring quarters

I. Supervise GMs activities and timesheet submission.

J. Administering pre-, mid-, and end-of-program evaluations for GMS to assess progress.

K. Assistance with planning and execution of Research Institute and Symposium during Spring quarter

L. Work with the SJCC and UCSC project directors and the STARS program for institutionalization of grant activities.

Special Comments: This position is only open to Graduate Students and is being offered at $23/hour for 5-7hours/week during fall, winter and spring quarters of 2017-18.

The Lead Research Mentor is an integral staff member of team of San Jose City College (SJCC) and UCSC staff whose goals are guided by the Title V: HSI Cultivamos Excelencia Project funded by the US Department of Education. The primary goals of the Cultivamos Excelencia Project is to motivate and retain Latinx and other historically underrepresented students to complete a degree at a research university. SJCC and UCSC use a combination of tutoring, mentoring, research skill instruction, transfer advising and participation in undergraduate research experiences to encourage self-efficacy, skill development, and motivation to complete their bachelor degrees on-time with highly honed set of analytical and writing skills.

The program seeks to serve up to 30 students with academic majors in the Arts, Humanities, STEM and Social Sciences as undergraduate research scholars. SJCC students selected to participate in the program will be paired with a UCSC graduate student mentor in their respective area of study to develop a year-long
plan regarding involvement in research.
